I am a professionally practicing visual artist who lives on the Ottawa River north of Ottawa, Ontario. I work primarily with textiles and stitch, although I am also known for my work with natural materials wire, and paint. My practice is inspired by sharing and learning about new processes with other artists as well as the influence of my natural surroundings.
I began my journey at a very young age watching both my grandmother’s quilt. I used fabric to create clothing and other useful items. Growing up I was interested in arts and crafts. In high school I focused in on art class and prepared a portfolio and was accepted at the Ontario College of Art (OCA & Design University) in Toronto, ON. It was 1971, and the school was going through a transition. I attended one year in the general arts program. This was my foundation that kept drawing me back to art.
After my family was in school, my best friend and I began a business with a Craft, Gift and Fabric store which developed into a quilting store. I taught classes in quilting arts and discovered that fabric and fibres were an amazing media in which to create stitched art. I purchased a long arm quilting machine in 2000. I began experimenting and taking courses with the new mixed media artists who used textiles as their base. These courses included instructors like Sandra Meech, England, Sylvia Naylor, ON, Rayna Gillman, USA, Gunnel Hag, ON, Anna Hergert, Sask., Kit Vincent, ON, Hilary Rice, ON., to name a few.
In 2009 I entered a black and white art piece into the Canadian Quilters Associations 22nd Annual Juried Quilt Show. I received second place in small wall quilts. I then became a member of Studio Art Quilts Associates in the United States and replied to a call for entry in a Juried show “Creative Force”. My art was juried into the show and then travelled around the United States until September 2012. This same piece was included in a publication “Art Quilt Portfolio, The Natural World” by Martha Sielman. It was then published in a book review in the Quilting Arts Magazine. I continue to enter shows but have taken some time out of my career to help with another passion.
My art is very important to me. I spend as much time as possible, in my wonderful studio and create art. I want to share my wonder, awe of nature and my surroundings and my enthusiasm for creativity.
